Is Claude Code free? What it costs to start
The short answer
Is Claude Code free? No, and I'd rather just tell you that straight. There's no free tier, and Anthropic's own setup docs say it plainly: the free Claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code.
The cheapest way in is Claude Pro at $17 a month billed annually, or $20 if you pay monthly, and Claude Code comes included with Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans plus pay-as-you-go API accounts.
One catch worth knowing before you pay: your limits are shared. Chatting with Claude in the app and running Claude Code pull from the same allowance, so a long morning of conversation is exactly why the agent stops on you in the afternoon.
Short version up top, then the details: no free tier, $17 a month gets you in, and there’s one gotcha about limits I want you to know before you subscribe.
What does each plan cost?
Straight from claude.com/pricing:
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $17/mo billed annually, $20 monthly | Claude Code included |
| Max 5x | $100/mo | 5x the Pro usage allowance |
| Max 20x | $200/mo | 20x the Pro usage allowance |
| Team, standard seat | $20/mo annually, $25 monthly | Claude Code on every seat |

Now, you’ll notice Anthropic doesn’t publish a token count or message number for any of these. There’s a rolling five-hour window and a weekly window (Pro plan limits), and the honest truth is you find your ceiling by hitting it.
When you do hit it, you can turn on usage credits and keep going at standard API rates (usage credits). Or take the hint and go touch grass for a bit.
Is Pro actually enough to use it?
For an afternoon of building a landing page, a script, a small site? Yes.
Here’s the scale reference so you can see where you’d land. Anthropic publishes numbers from full-time engineers running Claude Code all day, every day: around $13 per developer per active day across their enterprise deployments (cost docs). If you’re building your own projects a few hours at a time, you’re nowhere near that.
And here’s the one habit that stretches a Pro plan further than anything else, totally free: run /clear between unrelated tasks. Claude Code sends your whole conversation with every single request (that’s just how these tools work), so stale context quietly bills against your limits all afternoon.
And those limits are one pool. The chatting you did at breakfast and the agent you’re running now drink from the same allowance (one limit across surfaces).
Can you try it without paying anything?
Not through Anthropic, not today.
Anthropic’s setup docs say it plainly: the free Claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code access (setup docs).
The realistic minimum is one month of Pro at $20, which happens to be about the right amount of time to figure out whether it fits how you work. And if you’re still deciding which coding agent deserves that twenty bucks, I put Codex, Claude Code, and Cursor side by side so you can pick before you pay.
My advice: start with a real project you already have, not a toy. The setup that makes the second session better than the first takes about twenty minutes.
